Product utilization and conversion project on Blood Culture Bottles generates $97,299 in savings for Berkshire Health Systems

Savings solution

Yankee Alliance works with members to standardize product utilization, implement clinical best practices and drive costs out of supply chain.  Yankee Alliance proactively worked with member Berkshire Health Systems (BHS) to undertake an identified costs savings product conversion project on blood culture bottles.

In April 2021, Yankee Alliance provided BHS a benchmark report to introduce savings by converting from glass blood culture bottles to  plastic bottles requiring a product change to an all in one phlebotomy device. To roll out the product change, Yankee Alliance collaborated with BHS department leaders and supplier business partner to provide onsite training and education. In order to minimize any implementation challenges, it proved helpful to involve the supplier in training the hospital staff.  With a focus on implementing an easier and effective solution for staff to obtain blood, BHS achieved sizeable savings of $97,299 by converting to an all in one phlebotomy device.

Key factors to savings include:

  • Onsite training to ensure a seamless product conversion, utilization and best practices are followed.
  • Achieved savings with support from the hospital’s Supply Chain, Nursing, Emergency Room, Critical Care, Lab, Value Analysis Teams and other key stakeholders.
